Here are the group members and the location assignments for the presentations next week. The presentation is from 5 to 10 minutes long. You need to answer the following questions. You should shoot some pictures to support your answers to the questions.
a) Conscious use of Design to support the function of the shop.
b) Unconscious use of Design (Visual elements, standard elements, methods of presentation, layout...) to support the function of the shop.
c) Additional design that might improve the experience for the people who buy their food at the shop.
d) What is the economy that best fits the market and the way it operates...agrarian, industrial, service, experience
You need to think about the kind of people who come to the particular shop you are analyzing as you consider the role and opportunity for design within the store. These stores reach out to particular kinds of people and you need to think about who those people are before you can improve the ability of the shop to reach its customers and potential customers.
Quote for the week, "Forgiveness is easier to get than permission." Shoot pictures like tourists and try to be a bit subtle, particularly in City Super. If you ask permission to shoot pictures they will say NO! so just shoot pictures and be very apologetic if they say you aren't allowed to take pictures.

If you have any questions, let me know. The presentations are rather informal but they do need to answer the questions.
For additional information I have posted a PDF file from Tom Peters on "Design Mindfulness" that will give you some background on the importance of design in business. This can be accessed on the resource page.

Hello, I am cindy and my group is assigned to go to wet market.
Do we need to consider the arrangement of the shops in wet market? For example, the location of "dry food" is near the entrance while the "wet food" is centered in the middle of the market.
What does "additional design" mean?
Is it provided by the shop?
OR
we think an additional design to improve the experience for people?
Thanks for giving us advice.
Hi sir,
we are confused about the question 4 " way it operate "
can u explain more to us
thank you very much~

In class I showed you four types of economic markets with their definitions.
The four are:
agrarian
industrial
service
experience
Each of these food markets fits into one of these categories by the way they treat what they sell. Try your best to fit your food market into one of these categories.
You can see the definitions at: http://www.coms.hkbu.edu.hk/williams/concepts/marEconTrans.swf
I will use the examples you show to talk more about these kinds of markets and I want you to think about where your food store might fit.

Cindy,
I think the arrangement of the different shops is a part of the intended design.
Additional design is the ways that you might be able to improve the food shopping experience through additional design elements, graphics, photos, positions or something else you might create.
